Labor Day haul: theory and Nine West

Tuesday, September 07, 2010

I took advantage of Labor Day sales this past weekend and hit up the outlets with my cousin... and came back with two unexpected items.

First up, theory Bindi Tailored blazer in indigo, size 4. I don't want to sound vain, but size 4?! Everything I own is 00, XS or petite sizes! Anyhow, size is just a number, right? :) This jacket was on the final sale rack, the last one in its size. My cousin actually tried it on first but it was kind of tight on her, so I tried it on... and I personally think it's a tad big on me. But at $75 (80% off), I figured I can just wear thicker layers underneath (that, or gain weight :P) because it was too good to pass up! I like how the sleeves could be rolled up so the lining peeks through -- a la boyfriend blazers, which I've been looking to find. So now I've got myself a two-in-one blazer, regular suiting and boyfriend style!

Another item I've been wanting are taupe/grey suede wedges. I felt so lucky to have found these Nine West Kleoo wedges in dust cloud, size 6 (non-outlet version sold here) at their outlet store! I haven't had a chance to wear them for long periods of time yet, but they are certainly comfortable walking around the house. The heel height is perfect for me, but the color is what I love about it the most -- a cool, taupe-y grey :) I'll have to spray these with some suede protectant first, but can't wait to wear them out!

Navy & Gray

Tuesday, February 05, 2013

I was watching CBS' Super Bowl pregame show over the weekend and couldn't help but notice how stylish Clay Matthews looked in his three-piece suit (not that he needs any help looking good). I searched but can't find a photo online. His vest looked to be cut lower, so it framed his jacket evenly when buttoned. I used that as the source of inspiration for today's outfit. I went with a menswear theme and buttoned the top button of my cardigan to mimic the "vest." To tip the scales back towards the feminine side a bit, I chose a high-neck lace top.

Of A Different Stripe

Tuesday, December 03, 2013

My wallet took a beating during the month of November. The items that I had on my wishlist (and eventually bought) mostly fell on the higher-end of what I typically spend per item. So when totaled, the amount sure added up quick. We'll see how much I end up keeping once the packages arrive. In the meantime, an outfit today featuring a mixture of a couple new(er) and some older items across varying price points.

Have a good one!

In Bloom

Monday, April 14, 2014

Textured gold and bronze -- a chunky necklace, sparkly heels, and a tweed-y clutch -- are today's choice of colors to dress up a graphic tee. Like always, I kept the rest of the outfit simple and casual.

Have a great start to a new work week!

Layers Upon Layers

Monday, February 25, 2013

I had an (obvious) light bulb moment when putting together today's outfit: v-necks are great for layering. Unlike a traditional sweater, a wrap sweater can be easily adjusted to accommodate various layers worn underneath. I was able to wear a turtleneck and a plaid shirt, while still accessorizing with a necklace, all under a navy wrap sweater. Despite multiple layers, there was no bulkiness and I stayed quite warm even on a windy day.

Fall Colors

Wednesday, November 14, 2012

It took me awhile to warm up to brown/gold (prefer black/silver), but over time, I've accumulated variations of both colors in my wardrobe. To date, I still think this olive-brown cardigan I'm wearing under the blazer is one of the hardest colors to pair. As the main color, it sometimes reminds me of vomit, but as an accent color, no such thoughts cross my mind. I suppose for some things, less is more.

Navy / Green

Wednesday, February 26, 2014

Once again I (subconsciously) turn to the navy blazer + white jeans combo when I want wear a colored top. Case in point: one, two. That's me, a creature of habit.

Loose Ends

Saturday, November 08, 2014

I've been so busy taking turns wearing my myriad of jackets/coats that my blazers are being neglected. Coupled with a few items that are currently in constant rotation -- orange clutch, poppy printed scarf (scroll through the last few posts and you can see their multiple guest appearances) -- and today's outfit is a resulting mix of preppy, color, and comfort.

Ladylike

Wednesday, June 06, 2012

I dug out two pieces, the scarf and the dress, that haven't seen the light of day in much too long. I felt like I should be wearing this outfit in the fall, not the first week of June. Hooray for warmer weather this upcoming weekend!

Soft Florals

Friday, September 07, 2012

I had the pleasure of spending time with Elle this past weekend while she was in town. In between chatting and laughing like old friends, we shopped, ate, and ate some more. We did pretty well most of the afternoon, not buying anything until we stepped foot inside H&M... and that's when the enabling began. She convinced me to try on printed pants, to which I agreed only if she tried on a forest green blazer. Both of which are really just excuses to take photos.

We concluded the day with Korean food, with the first stop at Nak Won and then at Bon Chon. There's two Bon Chons in the area, but this is the first time I've ever been. It's good... though I still have to give the nod to Popeye's.

Have a good weekend!

Loafin'

Tuesday, October 29, 2013

Over the summer, my striped maxi dress may have been my most worn item (ie: 1,2,3,4,5). If I had to guess, I'd say it was featured at least once a week on the blog? Though no more. Scoot over maxi dress, there's a new kid in town. Perhaps I'll compile outfits with this mustard yellow top for a future ways to wear post?

With Cherry Red on Top

Thursday, December 06, 2012

When layering in cold weather, I pick items by paying close attention to their fabric content and thickness. The innermost layer is generally the thinnest, and increases with each layer added. For today's outfit, I chose a "tissue" turtleneck as the base layer for its practicality (keeps the neck warm). I then added an oxford shirt, which is slightly thicker and goes with the color palette I had in mind. I finished with a blazer that's partially made of wool. Three layers sound like a lot, but each is thin enough so I didn't walk around feeling like the Hulk.

Navy Blazer + White Pants

Friday, March 23, 2012

Today's outfit is my take on the navy blazer with white pants look typically worn by men, topped off with a neon pink tee. I felt right at home strolling along a semi-deserted golf course :)

Have a great weekend!

Petite Fashion Challenge #12: From Night to Day

Thursday, January 05, 2012

Hosted by Khatu @ i am Khatu, Petite Fashion Challenge #12: From Night to Day has us restyling a glamorous look that you would typically wear for a night-out-on-the-town into daytime casual wear. Easy right? Bonus points if you can restyle it for work!

Coming up with three outfits for this challenge was hard. When I think glamour, I picture something fancy, sparkly, black, or a mix. I nixed out styling around my most versatile dress because I've already done that in a previous challenge. I also ruled out a skirt because it would probably be too short for most office environments. That leaves me with some sort of top as the common piece between all three outfits. After rummaging through my closet, a white sequin top it is*.

Night-out-on-the-town look: I chose a classic color combination of white against black. A little bling and (faux) leather adds some fun to a night look.
necklace: Ann Taylor winter sparkle (similar)
blazer: H&M boyfriend (similar)
top: Ann Taylor sequin front (similar; similar)
ring: Forever 21 pearlescent cluster (similar)
skirt: Forever 21 leatherette (similar)
tights: Forever 21 sheer (similar)
bag: Chanel M/L flap (similar)
shoes: Ann Taylor perfect patent (sold here)

Daytime casual look: Continuing with the white against black bottoms theme, I dressed down this outfit with a casual tee and fur vest.
vest: Zara Girl fur waistcoat (sold here; similar)
necklace: Forever 21 leaf accent (similar)
tee: Gap v-neck (similar)
belt: Express wide (similar)

Work-appropriate look: And lastly, I swapped out dark bottoms for a dark jacket up top.
pants: Express Editor luxury stretch (this season's version sold here)

*I've been known to interpret past challenges in my own way, so hopefully I read this one correctly.

Calm Before the Snowstorm

Thursday, January 23, 2014

I wore this outfit on a surprisingly (but much welcome) spring-like day earlier in the week. Temps were in the 50s (!) and I couldn't resist putting together an outfit with bright colors. The extra cheesy smile and spring in my step summed up my happy mood perfectly.

Black and Blue

Thursday, November 08, 2012

Colors that could be mistaken for others are pairings that I tend to stay away from. However, my options were limited if I wanted to wear a dark, tailored blazer with a turtleneck. So instead of wearing navy directly on black, I broke it up with a middle layer in gingham. Blue is now in the forefront, with black not as noticeable in the background.

top: H&M turtleneck (similar)
