I'm not sure how I feel about this outfit. Loved the look on the model, but on the fence about my recreation. I think the proportion of stripes + lace looked off on me -- too much of both. Perhaps it's time to add a similar lace top to my wishlist :)

shirt (underneath): Gap striped cowlneck (similar)
dress: Ann Taylor vintage floral (may still be at the outlets; long version sold here)
clutch: H&M snake-embossed envelope (may still be in stores; similar)

  1. I really like your take on the image. You could try pairing your dress with jeans and try tucking it in to have a closer resemblance to the model but I think your take is really pretty as well.

  2. i love your take on the outfit but maybe scrunching up the sleeves would help with the shorter dress proportion? and i've definitely had a lace top on my wishlist for awhile... let's hope a good one comes our way! :)

  3. Hmm... I like the idea. I wonder how it would look with a shell rather than a dress, like the one from the BR Mad Men Collection.

  4. I agree with Kileen. If you rolled up the sleeves it might help and maybe throw in a belt. I do love the clutch, such a great color.

  5. I love seeing your inspiration and your take on it. I think a belt would make it look a bit more casual. :)

  7. I love that you always try new things...who would ever think lace and stripes would work together like that?

  8. Love your look but agree with Kileen on the sleeves, might help balance out the proportions and make it even more casual....Great job, I think I like yours better than the models...

  10. Fashion is all about risks, and I'm really glad you shared your trial with us! I think the original outfit looks a lot more casual w/ the jeans + jacket. The lace therefore, goes really well with the stripes.

I have the same AT dress, and it's pretty dressy. Perhaps that's why the outfit doesn't have quite the same feel. It's still cute, though. Maybe a thick, rugged, brown leather belt or a pair of leather boots could dress it down a bit more?

  11. I love how you share all of these experiments with us! I agree that maybe a lace top would work better than the dress. I know H&M had a lace crop top over the summer, I wonder if they have any left or something similar still?

  12. i would never think to wear stripes under lace! this makes it work appropriate, i love it!! i do also adore the lace top on your "inspiration" pic!!

  13. I think you are right about the proportions - you have such great sense of style, and about just how much of what! it works so great on the inspiration pic because of the jeans, too: casual w casual with a little flair - the lace. Both H&M and urban outfitters had lace tops this summer. Have you tried top shop? Or Promod (they only ship to Europe though, but they are stellar!)

  14. Very interesting, I would have never tried this out! I like it but there is something off about it - I think you're right maybe a top would have worked better just might be too much lace. Have you tried this dress OVER a collared shirt yet? I know you've worn shirts over it, was curious how it would look the other way around (but I guess the shirt would have to be very slim or it would be too bulky!)

  16. I love how you reworked the dress for this outfit, but I do agree it would look super cute with the jeans...adding a top to the mix might now be such a bad idea :)
