Boho, Hobo

Sunday, June 05, 2011

The boho look, or as some people call it, the hobo look (lol) is one that I'm not too familiar with. When asked, I envision a mixture of lace, crochet, embroidery, ruffles, with loads of accessories. The color palette is mainly earth-tones with splashes of bright colors. This is perhaps too safe and cliché, but when stepping out of my comfort zone, I don't want to stick out too much until I'm comfortable.

There were a couple items in my closet that I could have used as the base layer (Ann Taylor crochet dress vs J.Crew ruffle dress), but ultimately I went with the more casual J.Crew dress. This dress is lightweight and a bit sheer, which made it perfect for adding multiple layers (because you know, when I start layering, I don't know when to stop). An embroidered top, cardigan, necklaces, belts, bracelets, rings, and boots rounded out my outfit.

Are there certain pieces you deem a "must" for boho looks?

dress: J.Crew (similar)
top: Abercrombie & Fitch (similar)
belts: H&M (may still be in stores); Forever 21 (similar)
necklaces: Forever 21 (similar); Banana Republic (similar)
bracelets: Forever 21 (similar); unknown
boots: Old Navy

  1. hi tripod twin! :D lolI don't even know what boho look is actually:D I love layering, I think that's why Fall is more favorite season.

Your dress is really cute, I thought it was a skirt!!

  2. Great job with the hobo/boho look! I always thought that look was more of the really flowy dresses/skirts type of thing with gladiator sandals but regardless you look awesome...I'm totally in love with your cowboy boots! I'm assuming it got a little cold where you are?

    Hope your weekend was great!!!

  3. You should submit this entry for this contest . You did a great job recreating a boho/hobo look.

  4. @simplyvonne - Nicole Richie probably started the whole trend. A bit messy, but casual chic at the same time. I can't wait for fall either for more layering :) I'm missing it already!

@b_ra - Haha, yes me too! But I don't own gladiator sandals, so the boots had to do. It was cooler in the mornings a few days last week, but after the temperatures warmed up, I switched out to flip flops :D

@PetiteLittleGirl - Done! Crossing my fingers for the best. There are lots of great entries already.

  6. I love this on you!! You are great at putting together outfits. Thanks for sharing.

I always think flowy, non-constricting pieces when I think boho...nothing should be snug.

    :)

  7. Yay, this is layering at its best, Cee! I'm so ignorant when it comes to boho (or hobo, I'll give you the same "lost" look if you use either one of them. lol). Anyhow, I love this look on you, I think it's different from your regular look, but I can still find Cee in it! Digging those boots, again! :)

  8. Love it, Cee. You do layering like you're an old pro. Everything about this outfit is great...the necklaces, the belts, the shirt, the color combo, the BOOTS (too cute). Nice job, lady!

  10. This is def a boho look for sure!....Very lovely ;) I think there are a lot of items that can be used to create a boho look and they can be mixed up so many ways, it really does make it fun.

  11. This is such a pretty look from you...you totally pulled off the boho look while still looking sleek, put together, and modern!

  12. Woohoo, I LOVE this look! You always look so put together without looking you put ANY effort into it, HOW do you DO IT? Amazing!

  13. You look too cute to be a hobo, LOL! I envision boho as more of a long flowy hippy skirt with lots of jewelry.

  14. I'm always so impressed with how you layer things! This one in particular really makes your dress look like a top tucked into a skirt - how do you come up with these things?! Glad I have you as my resource :)

  15. You know, you pull off the boho style with a great streamlined look. I'm loving the beaded and braided accessories...you nailed it. I don't think there are "must" pieces with a boho style because it's so out of the box and free form.

To me, the boho style is an eclectic, international, ethnic jumble with tons of earth tones, natural stones and metals, and textured items. But perhaps I'm easily influenced by the aging hippie/gypsy/folk generation and their hipster counterparts in the West Coast...cuz my ideas are kind of generic. lol. =)

  16. Oh hobo, hobo. You look hobo-licious. I think Serena Van der Woodsen in GG Season 1 did the hobo look really well. Lots of fringes, free flowy tops, throwback to the seventies. love that look, although I'm not eddy enough to pull it off. :-P

  17. I didn't think boho/hobo chic when I saw your look. I thought more country chic but its lovely. Love the earth tones and the white. Hahaha. I think of paisley and flowery prints. I also think of flowy maxis when I think boho. I also think moccasins.

  18. Stepping outside of your comfort zone is always fun. I really love the lace skirt and cardigan; great color. When I read "belt...s" it took me awhile to realize that you have 3+ belts on! I never thought about layering belts before. I must try this sometime. How long did it take you to put this outfit together? I'm sure you've answered this before but how long does it take for you to put together an outfit? Do you plan a day in advance? Or are your outfits something you just throw together last minute?

  19. @Really Petite - Aww, thank you so much Annie!

@Anne - Great tip! I'll have to remember loose and flowy the next time I attemp this trend again :)

@Shasie - Thanks, I love wearing dresses as skirts -- I get so much more wears out of them!

@Vicky - I'm so glad you can still see "me" in this outfit, because I worry when I try out new "trends" that aren't really me if I'm just playing dress up or if I come even somewhat close. So thank you for the support :)

@Erin - Thank you for the thumbs up! If only I had gladiator sandals (which I think are more boho), then the boots would be swapped out in a heart beat!

@gold N turquoise - Uh oh, next time I should be messier? :) Perhaps untuck some of the shirt?

@Callandra - Thank you, Callandra! You are the queen of different looks, so this means a lot :)

@Tara - I will take it. Thanks, Tara!

@Elaine A (TOBeautyReviews) - Haha, a lot of effort went into this outfit :) Looks can be deceiving. In the end I just hope I didn't over do it, so I'm glad you liked it, Elaine.

@Style Journey - I can picture it now, a flower child look from the 70s? Now why didn't I think of that earlier?!

@SewPetiteGal - Ditto! Inspiration works both ways :) I just know I spend way too much time blog surfing, haha.

@Stylepint - Ahh, I love your choice of words to describe boho! Oh man, now I want to visit the West Coast simply to be inspired. One day soon, I hope!

@Lisa - Me neither :( But I have to say Serena does EVERY look well. Speaking of GG, I still need to catch up on the second half of this past season. So behind!

@Jarucha - I heart your critiques, Jarucha. It keeps me from getting a big head, and also challenges me to experiment with different pieces, so please keep them coming! Speaking of maxis, that is a trend that I'm wanting to jump on but still waiting for the perfect print and fit. Moccasins, sadly not so much. Perhaps next time I'll can somehow channel country-boho-chic :)

@serenadeveryday - Hehehe, two belts actually. The H&M belt is red on one side and brown on the other. I think I must've turned part of it inside-out when I tied it on, haha. There are some items that when I see it, I'll instantly know how to incorporate into my wardrobe. But there are also lots that don't come easy. I've never timed myself, but it depends on the type of mood I'm in and what kind of look I'm going for. For more grand occasions, or if I'm experimenting with a different look than normal, I'll usually play around with different items mentally in my head for days before I end up with something I like.

  20. Gorgeous! I love the earth tones in this combination :) Lovely.

  21. You basically described every Olsen Twin outfit in that first paragraph, so I was a little concerned about what the pictures would contain :)

Of course, you pulled it off perfectly. I love the color of the cardigan...and I'd never have guessed that this was a dress and not a skirt. Seriously, you have a crazy talent for making a dress look like separates!

  24. Your boho look was one of my faves for the contest!!

I think earthy tones are required for boho looks...but I still ended up going with a colourful version..lol!
