Old Navy Fitting Room Reviews + 25% Off

Until Mon. July 30th, Old Navy is having a 25% off sale on almost everything. Print out in-store coupon here (if link doesn't work, go through oldnavy.com to download) or use code ONSAVE25 for online purchases.

1) Drawstring-tube jersey maxi dress in charcoal stripe, size XS (sold here) - This maxi has been on my wishlist for a long time. Small sizes sold out quickly online and in stores, so I've been patiently waiting for returns. I lucked out and found a lone XS hanging on the rack. The material is kind of thin but comfortable. The fit is pretty decent overall, but XS P would fit me better, especially the length. I can only move up the drawstring waist so high before I start to look ridiculous. Since petite sizes are all sold out, I brought this home with me and plan on taking it to the tailors for a hem. After the promo, the maxi is $22.46 in stores and $24 online.

2) Ruffle-trim tie-belt dress in white hearts, size XS (sold here) - I was drawn to the printed hearts of this dress after missing out on J.Crew's heart throb items. Besides the print, the length is about the only thing I like about this dress. The torso is roomy, neckline a bit low, and armhole is too big. I passed. The dress is $22.46 after promo online and in stores.
I didn't see any more prints online besides the hearts, but in stores I also saw two polka dot versions, black/white and red/beige (below).

3) Whatever J.Crew releases, it's a pretty safe bet that Old Navy will soon follow, at a much more affordable price point. A perfect example is this polka dotted boat-neck sweater in sea salt, size XS (sold here), which happens to also come in a heart print much like J.Crew's Tippi in heart me. The sweater is thin and pretty much on par with Old Navy quality. The fit is pretty decent on me, but I worry it may shrink due to the material being 100% cotton. I did end up taking the sweater home with me to think about it some more. I'm not sure if $18.71 after promo is worth keeping or if I should wait for further reductions.

4) Rockstar super skinny jeans in sea salt, size 2R (sold here) revamped for 2012 in a rainbow of colors. I tried on last year's version in the same size (2R) and found the front to fit well, but the behind to be baggy. This year's version turned out to be the exact opposite, looks nice from the back but too many creases in the front. I strongly recommend trying on various pairs in the same size because I've seen Old Navy clothing to differ by a couple centimeters all around.

Both last year and this year's length is comparable, hitting just above the ankle bone on me. I felt last year's white color is more of a true white while this year's is more ashy. I passed. The jeans are $26.21 after promo online and in stores.

5) Rockstar super skinny jeans in honeycomb, size 0R (sold here) - Just for kicks, I also tried on the same pair of jeans a size down. I remember I had trouble zipping up last year's version. This year's? I got it to zip up but didn't feel and look at all comfortable. Yuck.

6) Printed cuffed shorts (3-1/2") in blue plaid, size 0 (item #: 143133) featured below left is a sale item, which I don't see any more of online. From my experience, Old Navy's shorts sizing is pretty consistent. This one fit as expected, with ~1 cm waist gap, which is fine with me. Not that I need any more gingham items, but I couldn't decide, so I did bring it home to think about further :D The shorts are $11.25 after promo.

7) Patterned chambray shorts (3 1/2") in green stripe, size 0 (sold here) featured below right is a new release. I heart stripes and the green is such a cheery color. I felt this pair fit exactly the same as the blue plaid version, with a similar waist gap. I passed on the shorts because for $17.21, they're still a bit pricey.

Along with the green, the patterned chambray shorts also comes in a pretty navy stripe version.

Happy shopping!

  1. Thanks for sharing the review! I am curious about this year's Rock Star... and boat neck sweater. That sweater is really lovely on you. Too bad I forgot to print out the coupon! ><

    1. SS, try showing them the coupon from your phone. They may let you use the discount that way.

  2. I like hearts but the ON heart-patterned dress doesn't 'wow' me. The necklace is low and spade-shaped looking. I got the two heart boat neck sweaters. Quality seems ok. Also got the heart patterned tank to fulfill my love of hearts!

    1. Ooh, I don't think I saw the heart patterned tank. I'll have to go search online now. Thanks for the heads up!

    1. Aren't they? I also saw polka dotted chambray shorts online, but didn't see any in stores. Debating if I should go ahead and place an order as well, haha.

  4. thanks for this Cee! I know from experience that fitting room reviews are a lot of work!

I have been eyeing that heart-print dress and saw that Tara from Mix and Match Fashion purchased it in the Navy/Green and complained about the length (too long on her) ... so I may have to just try it and see!

    1. I strongly suggest seeing the color in person. The white looks white by itself, but when placed next to a true white item, it didn't look as bright =/

  7. I tried on the white jeans today...it was awful. haha, I would show you pictures but they would blind you. I legitimately need to wear a size 2/4/6 in those rockstar jeans to be comfortable.

Love the polka dot sweater...why didn't I see any polka dot items in stores today? Dare I go back?

I actually really like the yellow jeans on you, I feel you would do something great with them.

  9. Hi Cee, I never notice the similarity between Old Navy and J.Crew before ... maybe because I hardly shop at Old Navy nowadays(I used to do it in the past). Always learning something from you and that is AMAZING, THANKS!

By the way, love the heart dress... funny because I just made a post yesterday on my blog about heart prints items. I was surprised how they are everywhere. Check it out:

  10. Went to return something at ON - my rock star jeans in creme caramel, actually. Always disappointed that their colored options fit o differently from their reg rock star denim. I did pick up the same dot sweater in both colors, some Oxford shirts, and their chambray shirtdress...Gigi did a post on it, and it's worth checking out since it runs small.

  11. PS. My ON store does accept coupons from my iPhone...and the heart sweater is super cute styled...I have both of those as well.

  12. Sorry for bombing your post, but I also saw some Lauren by Ralph Lauren riding boots in brown and black colors today at DSW. May be online as well. They were $150 from over $275 msrp, not marked down as of yet. Pretty similar to the ones on your wish list. :)

    1. Caroline, you are amazing! I picked up a pair of Tory Burch riding boots from the recent Nordstrom Anniversary sale. Marked down to $300 from $450 so I figured I'd give it a shot. I love them, but of course if there's a cheaper alternative from DSW, I won't be able to pass up the opportunity to check them out. Thanks for the heads up!

PS - After trying on sweaters and hearing about your haul... I'm so ready for fall :)

    2. It's the Serana boots if you wNt to google image. Online is sold out, but I did see reviews. You can also call dew for a store charge send. I know the dsw here in Colorado Springs has them in stock in both colors.

    3. Thank you, thank you!!

    4. No worries! If they don't charge send, I can send a pair...I grocery shop at whole foods next door every week. I think they are stock from last winter...not many prs left, and I get a 10% discount.

Love your blog as an Asian American! I'm 5'7 1/2 with the typical Asian figure, so it's still hard to find clothes. if you know of anyone with the Anthro bowtied beauty boots from last year in 8.5 or 9, please send them my way!!!

    5. You're too sweet, Caroline :) I went to my local DSW after work today and asked a SA to do an inventory search for me. Unfortunately there's none left in my size =/ Thank you for your kind offer, though!

PS - Just googled the Anthro boots. So cute! Will keep my eyes peeled for ya!

  13. I bought the polka dot sweater in white also... and am thinking about going back for the white jeans, they aren't the super bright white that the pair I already own are and I think they would be cute for fall. But the Rockstar fit isn't great on me either (good for the price, but not great, if you know what I mean). I love those striped shorts, but didn't see them at my store - very cute!

    1. I believe the striped shorts are a new release, so your store should be receiving them soon.

You're right, bright white jeans are perfect for summer, and off-white would be a great alternative for fall. I say try on various pairs in your size... there may just be enough quality control differences that you'll find a pair that fits you almost perfectly.

  15. I really like the heart print dress but the fit doesn't wow me. The polka dot sweater is cute. I was thinking about ordering it when ON has the 30% off sale but opt to get a leopard print cardigan instead.

    1. I say keep your eyes peeled. Knowing ON, the polka dot sweater could go on sale pretty soon (if it's not all sold out) and can be found for under $10, haha.

  16. I like the gingham shorts (and wound up buying them during their 30% off promo), but I think I like the green striped version more just bc I'm currently obsessed with green and I don't see striped shorts very much. Also like the wide stripes on the maxi, but am surprised it's so long! Gigi tried it on (5'2") and it looked ankle length.

    Thanks for the reviews!

    1. Hahaha am I wearing the maxi wrong?! I'm going to try a padded bra and pulling up and tightening the waist drawstring. I'd much prefer not having to make a trip out to the tailors if possible :)

      Delete
    2. I pulled the waist up high on the dress and then pulled the drawstring. I am also working w/a belly that is the size of 5 months preg (not preg, though) and that took up some length. Honestly, Cee, I would not spend another dime on the dress. Just tie it in a knot to one side between the knee and ankle and wear it like that. I've seen this and done it before. Where it falls will depend on the weight of the dress and how you gather the material into the knot. Would look cute like that w/a denim vest or whatever you choose.

    3. Before I saw your comment, I unknowingly followed your steps and pulled up the waist, tucked some material in, and added a belt for security. No need to shell out $ for alterations. YAY! Thank you!

      Delete
    4. That sounds like a good fix! Today I saw a woman with a maxi "altered" via a big pin. She gathered the material and then pinned a big starfish or shell or something near the knee. It was really cute.

    5. That sounds super cute! Will have to give it a shot sometime :)

  17. I really like the maxi dress and the polka dots sweater on you. I havent been to Old Navy forever but looks like i'll be going anytime soon since im on a shopping ban :(

    1. Aww, it's okay :) Given ON's penchant for sales quite often, I bet by the time your ban's over, lots of items will be marked down. Hang in there girl!

    1. Hi there, the sandals are from H&M from over the summer. They're sold out now, so your best bet might be eBay. They run big, so I went down a full size. Here's a better photo. Good luck!
