Thursday, May 23, 2013Day 23, Thursday: Things you've learned that school won't teach you
1) Politicking at work. Sadly, work performance isn't the end-all, be-all. Soft skills matter. A lot.
2) Filing taxes. I was ecstatic when my brother decided to major in finance. Coming from a technical background, I figured he can now do my taxes because finance = business = taxes. WRONG. He said something about taking classes that only dealt with taxes at the corporate level. To this day, I still dread preparing my own taxes.
Apparently school taught me everything else in life because nothing else comes to mind. Just kidding. I'm still slowly waking up with coffee.

loving the headscarf on you -- so cute and really adds to the whole outfit! xo

I figured I'd give headbands a try before I chop off a good chunk of my hair ;)
DeleteI could not agree more with you on point #1. It astonishes me that some people just don't "get" it. You have to play the game if you want to win!
ReplyDeleteIt's funny because I can sympathize. I certainly know of my shortcomings and I'm sure I was one of those delusional people at the start of my career. Like with anything else in life, you gotta adapt and improve yourself!
Deletesadly #1 is too true. and doing taxes is never fun. :)
ReplyDeleteLove that dress!

i've never heard the term "soft skills." hopefully that doesn't mean i'm totally lacking. hrmmmm. oh, and i looooove doing taxes. its like a game. that i lose.
ReplyDeleteLol! You're a doc, so probably have more soft skills than others (like me). I usually hate generalization, but most times it's true ;)
DeleteAfter reading this short post of yours, I'd definitely be so interested to hear more about your work experiences what what you've learned!
ReplyDeleteMainly that I'm not cut out for office politics =/
DeleteI'd love to hear from you. Constructive criticisms welcome!
