Spot On

Thursday, January 17, 2013

Today's outfit was taken a few weeks ago, from when the weather was much nicer. It's been raining all week long (with possibility for snow today!), so I've been on a mini-break with no new outfits to share.

In past winters, I would take photos in my work bathroom. But this year, I've been spoiled by natural lighting and varying scenery, so I don't know if I'd go back to the bathroom route. How do you put up with photo taking in the cold? Always keep a jacket on? Quick snapshots with jacket off? Don't even bother with the outdoors? I'm freezing just thinking about it.

  1. It's been raining here in Atlanta too all week long and since I am dependent with my husband as the photographer I have to pray that when he's home the weather cooperates. I love this look and something that I will wear myself. You look great Cee. I swear will buy a great rain boots if I can find one that fits.

    1. Sam, if you're interested into getting into self-photography and don't mind spending a little money, I highly recommend this tripod for < $25. The price is higher than I remembered what I bought it for, but Amazon prices fluctuate. I've been using it for over a year and love how lightweight it is.

    1. Your home is beautiful, P! I'd hide inside too if I had your design taste ;) Unfortunately the only place inside my home where I wear shoes is kind of a small area, not to mention it's a huge mess right now.

  4. I hate taking pictures outside in the winter, but the bonus is that there aren't many people about, unlike summer when all the parks that I like to take pictures at are swarming with people :)

    1. All good points. I think continuing with outdoor photos is what I'm going to do, too. One day, I will conquer how easily I get cold *shakes fist*

  5. i have limits. if its in the 20's i go out with a coat and some hand warmers. if its in the 30's i'll try to snap some pictures without the coat, and i might even change and take pictures of other outfits i wore recently. the weather has been so unnaturally warm. normally we're in the 0-teens in january, or below 0

    1. Alright, that's it. The next time I'm cursing at the cold outside, I'm going to remember that you deal with much worse and I have nothing to complain about!

  6. It hasn't even snowed yet 5 hours after it was supposed to! What a huge disappointment for DC commuters... I was waiting all afternoon for the weather to go bad so I had an excuse to leave work early lol

    1. Julia, you might be the only one who is disappointed! You know this sums up our area perfectly so I can only breathe a sigh of relief that the afternoon commute went without disturbance. Or maybe I'm just saying that cuz I dipped out early regardless of the weather, lol.

  8. I wish I hadn't complained about that warm streak we had last week because it's just been miserable cold and wet all week. I haven't seen the sun in over a week!
You've got the chic/preppy/cas look down, girl!

  9. I try to take my outfit photos all outside. It's super cold and raining all the time here in Seattle. I always just try to find at least one break in the rain so I can slip outside and just have my photos taken right away. It's tricky. Or I've recently found a spot in our work parking garage with some natural light coming in. That's been somewhat working. haha.. In my latest outfit post, I'm actually standing while it's raining on me. Can't really tell.. I try not to give that away too much. ;)

    I love your jacket btw!

    1. Oh man, to be constantly at the mercy of the rain is rough. Compared to you (and others who have commented), I've realized I have it pretty good, so I shall stop my complaining right now :)

When I lived at an apartment, I would take photos in the parking garage too! I was pretty safe from the rain and got lots of natural lighting there. Now I kinda miss it. I'm glad you found a spot that works for you!

  10. I usually just bear with the cold for a few minutes while the BF snaps photos. I usually keep my jacket on when he's fiddling with the controls, and then whip it off for a few photos at a time! Oh, the things we do for good photos...

    1. Hahaha I know, right? So trivial in the grand scheme of things. When I see photos that turn out well, I won't lie, I feel like the cold is all worth it.

  11. Great outfit, Cee! You look considerably warmer than I am :) I've been reading your blog for quite some time now and coincidentally, I got an NEX-F3 recently. I am having trouble getting the focus right when using a self timer. The F3 doesn't support remote control and the autofocus just locks in after I press the shutter. Hoping you could enlighten me, after seeing your gorgeous pictures!

    1. Hey Jessica, congrats on your NEX! I hope you love it as much as I do :)

To get the self-timer to focus properly, you'll have to use manual settings. Go to Menu -> Camera -> AF/MF Select -> Manualfocus (instead of Autofocus). Then pick a spot a few feet away and turn the ring on the lens (in front of the zoom ring, I believe) until the spot is sharp and in focus. When you turn the ring, the viewfinder will zoom in so you can better see the sharpness/contrast. After you focus, then hit the self-timer and run to the spot that you focused on. Unfortunately it's a hassle, but the more times you practice, the easier it gets. Let me know how it works for ya!

  12. It's has been while since I took any pictures. I'm currently without a photographer since my husband is currently busy with other project. Hence the lack of blogging these past few months. I think I may need to invest in a tripod.
    BTW you looks great.

    1. If you think $25 is ok for a tripod, I highly recommend this one. I've had it for awhile now and love how lightweight it is, but still able to support a relatively heavy camera.
