Spring Brights

A few weeks ago, I was eating dinner with DH and my in-laws (mother, grandmother) when we started talking about hassle-free ways to buy the bag I want from my aunt-in-law. There's a language barrier as my in-laws' English isn't great and my Cantonese is non-existent, so DH usually serves as a translator when I can't muddle my way through Mandarin (95% of the time). After we hashed out the bag buying logistics, the conversation took a slight turn:

DH to me [translating for his grandmother]: What brand is the bag?

Me: Coach.

No reaction.

DH to his grandmother: It's Co-chee.

MIL: Oh, CO-CHEE!

My SIL and I turned to each other, shared a look, then burst out laughing.

MIL to me: Why buy Co-chee? Me, I don't work and I have a Co-chee. Points to her bag. Grandma too. You work.

Caught off guard, I was trying to form a response, but she continued instead.

MIL: I can take you to Nordstrom Rack or outlet to buy a Co-chee.

Me: It's ok... the bag I want is new, so not many stores have it right now.

Hopefully I didn't offend anyone by sharing, because this conversation made my night, hahaha. From DH knowing to pronounce Coach the "Asian way" so his relatives would understand, to committing two faux pas in my MIL's eyes -- taking a step backwards in the status ladder and not buying at outlet-level prices.

    1. HAHA! Next time you talk bags with your mom/aunts, you should slip in Co-chee and see if they catch on. I don't know if I'd be able to do it with a straight face.

  2. That's hilarious Cee! DH is well trained in conversing bags with Asian ladies it seems. Good skill to have :)

I love the everlane t shirt on you by the way! I recently started breaking mine out too. Spring has finally made it to DC!

    1. I bought and kept two sizes in the Everlane tee. They've quickly become favorites, and will definitely be worn all spring & summer long. I'm so happy to hear you love yours too!

After a weird and snow-filled winter, I can't remember the last time I've looked forward to spring this much. Heck, I won't even mind putting up with allergies, lol! And I'm actually considering braving the crowd and checking out cherry blossoms this year.

    1. Me neither. Oh the things you learn :) I should start paying more attention to the conversations around me, even if it means only catching a word here and there.

  5. I had a pretty interesting experience with this brand too. My mother loves this brand, especially with the Stagecoach logo. She brought several purses to China for my aunt, who was really surprised to see the Stagecoach vs the letter "C" branding!

    1. I had to google Stagecoach because I'm not familiar with that line. What was your aunt's reaction? I can see her not liking it because it's newer and not many people are carrying it yet. Or, she could've been proud to be a trendsetter in China!
