Zara Double-Breasted Coat

Monday, September 19, 2011

I've had my eyes on a couple of coats since fall fashion started trickling in. One is this Zara Double-Breasted Coat in dark red, size S (sold here). Both pictures from Zara's site is misleading: the stock photo shows a model wearing a bright red coat, while a darker red was featured in the promotional ads. The color in real life is somewhere in between, but closer to a true primary red.

For a long coat, I was surprised at how light in weight it was. The fabric is pretty thin so I can only see this coat being worn in the fall and perhaps transitioning into the early stages of winter. Definitely will need something heavier in the dead of winter.

The coat fits me pretty well overall. The shoulders fit nicely and still allows for easy arm maneuvering (I always do the jumping jacks test but it's not like I ever find myself in that position...). I prefer sleeves on my coats to be on the longer end and I found these to be perfect. I did find the coat to hang on me in a boxier fashion when unbuttoned, but not so bad when buttoned. The buttons themselves are kind of cheap looking, but I can live with that.

I'm still on the fence about this coat. What do you think -- flattering enough to keep or return?

  1. Wow the colors are different to the actual coat! I think the fit is quite nice :)

  2. I really like the color, but it seems too boxy and not very flattering when buttoned up. And generally, I'm not a fan of the quality of Zara coats. I can already imagine what that coat feels and looks like up close and it's not worth the $90. You can do better!

  3. I think the coat is gorgeous on you but it sounds like you aren't pleased about it too much. I say return & hold out for something you're absolutely crazy about.

  4. The price isn't bad for a light winter coat, but I'm not crazy about the way it hangs on you buttoned or un-buttoned. It seems like the coat is meant to be boxy side rather than form-fitting, but I still feel the coat is too wide for you. Good length on you though.

  5. I vote for return, winter's just beginning and the coat selection will only get better!

  6. This probably sounds weird, but I actually like the view from the back best. I don't know, sounds like you were looking for a heavier weight jacket and this one doesn't fit that bill. I think if you already have a bunch of lighter-weight coats and aren't in love with this, your $90 could be better spent elsewhere.

  7. I don't think it's even flattering when buttoned up. You can find a better coat out there. : ) I prefer the deep red that is shown on the model. The one on the site just looks orange to me.

  9. i think the fit is fine on you. it has a slight flair, so it's not too boxy. i like the color, as well. but if the fabric is too thin to take you thru the winter, i don't know if it'd be worth the $$$ ???

  10. I like the coat on you, but not crazy about it. It's a great color, nice fit, most pictures look good expect the last one (buttoned up) which makes the coat look like it missed the bottom row buttons. :) What bothers me is the content:
    89% POLYESTER
    1% ELASTANE
    10% VISCOSE/ RAYON
Doesn't it make it feel like a fleece coat? If so the price is way too high. I'd say keep for $40, but not for $90.

  12. The color is fun but I think quality is not worth the price. I love the look of it, especially the collar and flare shape. However, if it doesn't fit the bill of what you want - return.

  13. I actually think you look super cute in the coat and that's kind of amazing that the sleeves fit just right. I'm leaning towards keeping it. Of if you find it's not going to get a lot of wear, maybe return and buy at sale price later on?

  14. i do like the coat for the price. I thought it was super expensive but not bad. Im not sure if I LOVE the coat though, maybe if it's a different color or if it's smaller idk. :/

  15. I think it fits you really well. I also prefer the darker red color of the print ad to the actual color, but that's just me. If you are OK with the color, I'd say keep it. I do think that everyone should have 3 fall/winter coats: one red, one camel, and one dark neutral (black, gray, dark brown, etc). So this fits my formula perfectly.

  16. What a crazy colour difference! I like the coat undone but done up I'm not really feeling it, I don't think it's fitted enough for you!

  17. WTH about the color? LOL I like it but I think there's better out there. I don't love the fit....

I say return and hold out for better one!

  18. sometimes, a coat is supposed to be a coat, not a dress. though you consider it a light coat, you still have to account for layering.

I think the fit is supposed to be boxy, but from the back, it doesn't look boxy at all.

    so the real question is:

    1. do you think it's worth your money?
    2. do you accept the fit to be boxy?

  19. Thank you all so much for your honest feedback. It really helps to have outsiders' opinions when I get so caught up in buying this or that b/c everything is just so darn pretty. As you can see, I have a hard time separating my "wants" from "needs" from "must haves" :) I took a long look at my lifestyle, and given that I already own a long coat, another one at full-price really can't be justified (at least not right now). Perhaps in the future if I dress up more or if the coat goes on sale, I'll rethink this. I also saw a similar red coat from Old Navy for around the same price, so I thought to myself, "This Zara coat is such a good deal!" when in reality, I shouldn't be putting Zara clothing on a higher plane.

@Vicky - I don't know much about fleece fabric contents, but this one has a wool-feel... kind of prickly.

@littlenashua - Umm... great minds think alike?! Camel down, red and black to go :)

  20. I'm really loving all of their bright colored coats!

  21. I really do love the idea of a bright coat, and the red is gorgeous, but I've always found that I have a problem w/double breasted coats. I don't know if it's because I'm short, but the look almost always makes me look wider than normal...

  22. i have to say that while i really like the red coat, i'm not completely in love with the cut. i would've preferred if the buttons went all the way down and there was less flare to it. i think you should return and hold out for something better, but that's just my 2 cents. :)

  23. You styled it well but I can imagine what it looks like IRL. It looks like it should have more buttons and the fit is too big on you. I think you can do better for the price you paid.

  24. Colors are so bold and I love them. Like most people said, it is just the beginning of the season. You should wait to find the one you love at first sight and wear.

  25. I love the coat but the color is not as advertised. I like the colors in the ads better-this one is a little too bright for my taste.

I found your blog while looking for stuff for petite gals like us. My jewelry is made with us in mind...since I couldn't find anything that really worked with my small frame.
